Broncos Run Game Breakdown – Week 16

So each week I’ve decide to break down about three to six rushing plays for the game that week so we can see how the offensive line, tight ends and running backs did that week. To do this I’ll take all the plays and randomly select three plays and add more depending on the time. I’ll take these plays and break them down using clippings from the game. For each play we will start with the down and distance, the personnel formation and grouping as well as the result of the play. We will also break the play into parts, the pre-play, mid-play, and the end. To get a better view of the image just click on it, it will open in a new tab. This will be the first running breakdown I do this season. Another feature is after going through each clip you can view it as a slideshow to see how the play progresses with the notes.

How to Understand the Images:
– Green lines are the path of the blockers
– The blue line represents the running back and his path
– The red lines are those of the defenders
– If a line is dashed that means a player has multiple options to choose from
– I include small caption boxes that help explain what is going on, pointing with black arrows to appropriate spots on the field.

Play 1

Notes: Solid blocking all around with only minor mistakes made only by TE Thomas and RG Vasquez. Exceptional running by Moreno to cut back early in the run and then outrun two defensive backs while using his hand to fight off a defensive back for over 10 yards.

Did Well:
– TE Jacob Tamme
– WR Eric Decker
– LG Zane Beadles
– RB Knowshon Moreno

Did Poorly:
– TE Julius Thomas

Play 2

– Down and Distance: 2nd and 10
– Personnel: 2 WR, 2 TE (1 TE split out wide), 1 RB
– Result: 7 Yard Gain
– Running Back: Montee Ball

Notes: This play could have been close to the 10 yard line had TE Thomas and LT Clark done their jobs since the next closest defender was a good 3-4 yards away. Instead it was still a solid run by Ball but was cut short.

Did Well:
– RB Montee Ball
– WR Decker
– LG Beadles

Did Poorly:
– LT Chris Clark
– TE Thomas

Play 3

– Down and Distance: 1st and 10
– Personnel: 2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB
– Result: 1 Yard Gain
– Running Back: Knowshon Moreno

Notes: This play simply broke down when LT Clark was just abused by JJ Watt who brushed him aside like a rag doll and just tackled Moreno from behind. RT Franklin not getting that defender blocked earlier hurt but this play is all on Clark.

Did Well:
– Moreno
– TE Green
– TE Thomas
– LG Beadles
– C Ramirez

Did Poorly:
– LT Clark

Play 4

– Down and Distance: 1st and 10
– Personnel: 2 WR, 2 TE (1 split out wide), 1 RB
– Result: 18 Yard Gain
– Running Back: Knowshon Moreno

Notes: Near perfect play, the two defenders who tackled Moreno, one was a DB who was never going to be blocked while the other was on TE Jacob Tamme. While it’s unlikely him being blocked would have changed much, Tamme was the only real breakdown in this play, outside of TE Thomas just getting roughed up by Watt but luckily that was on the backside of the play.

Did Well:
– Moreno
– Entire OL
– WR Demaryius Thomas

Did Poorly:
– TE Tamme

Play 5

– Down and Distance: 2nd and 8
– Personnel: 2 WR, 2 TE, 1 RB
– Result: 3 Yard Gain
– Running Back: Ronnie Hillman

Notes: Since the Broncos were just trying to run out the clock Gase wasn’t exactly creative but the play was still well run by Ronnie Hillman. Both TE’s, Joel Dreessen and Virgil Green, sealed the edges well but the interior offensive lineman, Beadles, Ramirez and Vasquez, all failed to seal the first and second running lanes. Had it not been for Hillman and Dreessen, this would likely have been a 1 yard run.

Did Well:
– Ronnie Hillman
– TE Joel Dreessen
– TE Virgil Green
– RT Orlando Franklin
– WR Caldwell

Did Poorly:
– LG Beadles
– C Manny Ramirez
– RG Vasquez
